The mission of the Gifted and Talented program at I.S. 126 is to provide students with an optimal and unparalleled education. It is the priority of our school to fulfill the needs, interests, talents, and proficiency levels of all of our student population. This program aims to fulfill the distinct academic and social needs to those students who display giftedness. Generally, gifted and talented students possess the ability to perform at a higher level than their specified grade level; so this program offers a specialized, compacted, and academically rigorous curriculum, enrichment programming, and a multitude of diverse individualized opportunities for learning and personal growth. The gifted curriculum and programming offers opportunities for students to intellectually flourish, and cultivate their critical-thinking, analytical, and creative expressions. It also provides opportunities to display leadership, citizenship, and community service.

Maintaining Eligibility in the Gifted Program

Students already enrolled in the gifted and talented program must continue to demonstrate high standards in academic and behavioral areas in order to maintain eligibility in the program.

Gifted & Talented Curriculum and Programming

The objectives of the mathematics curriculum are to provide an interactive and pragmatic approach to all Common Core Standards aligned 6th grade curriculum. The 6th grade curriculum is compacted so that the first half of the 7th grade curriculum is also covered.

The science curriculum and instruction offers an expansive range of subject content related to such fields of study as physics, chemistry, and biology. Additionally, there is also a comprehensive writing centered workshop curriculum in place that contains such pieces as editorials, short stories, poetry, memoirs, and response to literature.

Social Studies

The Social Studies curriculum and instruction includes an in-depth look at the geography, culture, and history of the Eastern Hemisphere; as well as the essential ancient civilizations. Often class work is project-based , highly collaborative, student-centered.

Art & Technology

The mission of the art program for incoming gifted and talented 6th graders is to teach students the fundamentals of all graphic art. The graphic art curriculum contains such units as anatomy, illustration, divisions of space, color theory, and I-PAD centered animation.
