Gifted & Talented Program

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

The mission of the Gifted and Talented program at I.S. 126 is to provide students with an exceptional and enriching educational experience. Our primary goal is to address the diverse needs, interests, talents, and proficiency levels of all our students. This program is dedicated to supporting the unique academic and social requirements of those students who demonstrate giftedness. Gifted and talented students typically possess the capability to excel beyond their designated grade level; thus, our program offers a specialized, accelerated, and academically challenging curriculum, along with enrichment opportunities and a wide array of individualized learning experiences for personal development.

The gifted curriculum is designed to foster intellectual growth, enhance critical thinking skills, and encourage creative expression. It also emphasizes the importance of leadership, citizenship, and community service.

Maintaining Eligibility in the Gifted Program

To remain in the program, students must uphold high academic standards and demonstrate exemplary behavior.

CURRICULUM AND PROGRAMMING

The curriculum for gifted students is designed to challenge and inspire. Students are placed in classes that emphasize problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum adopts an interactive approach, covering all topics in alignment with state standards. Students engage in learning by tackling real-world problems, enhancing their understanding and application of mathematical concepts.

Science

In the science curriculum, students explore physics, chemistry, and biology through student-centered projects and hands-on experiments. At the conclusion of the year, each student conducts a science experiment that is showcased in the school-wide science fair.

English Literature/Language Arts

The English Language Arts curriculum focuses on advanced texts that challenge students with complex vocabulary and concepts. These texts prepare students for the rigors of high school literature. Instruction includes peer editing, as well as writing editorials, short stories, poetry, memoirs, and literary responses.

Social Studies

In social studies, students delve into geography, culture, and history, focusing on the Western Hemisphere and ancient civilizations. They engage in collaborative projects that encourage teamwork and creativity.

Art & Technology

Gifted and talented students are required to take at least one arts or enrichment class each academic year. Our offerings include visual arts, computer science, Spanish, drama, and music, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience at I.S. 126.
